Robert Zoellick (World Bank' leader) about the high food prices

After the meeting of the IMF and World Bank’ Development Committee last weekend, Robert Zoellick said “We have to put our money where our mouth is now, so that we can put food into hungry mouths”. Furthermore, he called for “A new Deal for Global Food Policy” to close the gap of $ US 500 million for food aid by the UN WFP and to prevent further riots such as in Haiti or Egypt. Several governments showed response. The US will donate $US 200 million to the WFP and others will follow.

I think this is great: there are first steps to minimize the crises, but what could the western world do to avoid such crises in the first place? A global world needs global solutions and all peoples and problems to be included in the search process. As long as western governments try to solve problems such as the ‘global warming” with solutions which bring serious difficulties to the poor regions or do not think about a real open ‘Global Market’, we should not celebrate the deliverer of the current crises as real heroes. Hope remains, that ‘the new Deal for Global Food Policy” will keep this in mind.
